In Praise of Skitch

Skitch, the image swiss army knife for the Mac has gone through a few phases of existence. First, it was this mysterious beta that you had to have a secret handshake to get in on. Then it became the perpetual beta product that everybody used and nobody paid for. Finally, it is now the successful Mac OS X App store product that has 27 five star reviews.

Throughout all of these iterations, Skitch has remained the perfect app for quick and easy image annotation. Everyone I’ve turned on to this app (ranging from my science teacher niece to my graphics artist friends) loves it. Today I came clean and finally paid for Skitch. How about you?

Skitch is awesome. As a beta user, I was given a free year of their Plus-level service but it's something that'll I'll definitely pay for when my free time is over. I've tried a few other commercial screen capture applications including SnagIt but none are as easy to use and full-featured as Skitch.

When Skitch beta finally became 1.0, I subscribed to Skitch Plus for a year. A couple of weeks later, the Skitch team announced, "To say thanks, we’re offering everyone who used the beta a year of Skitch Plus, for free. We really should have thought of this sooner… very sorry about that."

Here's my subsequent note to the Skitch team:

When I read your offer, I thought, "Oh well, I already subscribed to Skitch Plus a couple of weeks ago. I'll click the button anyway. Maybe they'll add the year to my subscription."

What a great surprise to see the page announcing a TWO-year extension of my subscription.

    Skitch rocks!
