iCloud and Multiple iTunes Accounts

I’ve been thinking about how to take advantage of this iCloud love and am afraid I may have some trouble. My iTunes account is really old and affiliated with an older e-mail address. When I joined .Mac so many moons ago, I created a separate Apple ID, my .MAC account (which later became my MobileMe account). This has never been a problem. I’ve bought lots of apps, books, music, and video with the old iTunes account and the MobileMe account handles e-mail, calendar, and address book.

So what happens now? If I convert my MobileMe account to an iCloud account it will see none of my apps, books, music, and video. If I want to use iCloud for my purchased content AND my MobileMe related data, how am I going to pull that off?

I suspect I’m not alone. We’ll see.

I've had the exact same thought. I made my iTunes account on a @mac.com adress, have a @me.com email adress and to complicate things more, my gf and I have shared an iTunes account up until now.

Does this mean I have to repurchase all my apps if I wanna go use a seperate iCloud account than my girlfriend.

Yep, there will be a lot of people in the same predicament David and unfortunately I think many of us will be out of luck unless of course the Music Match service is Apple's work around for this?

I'm on the same boat. And to make it even more complex, my purchases on the Mac App Store have been using my MobileMe ID while my iOS purchases are on my iTunes one.

Seems like Apple should figure out a way to let us merge 2 Apple ID accounts.

I have the same issue. In fact, Apple did not allow me to use my .Mac email address when I set up my iTunes account. Here's hoping they shed some light on the issue soon.

I've been wondering the same thing. My itunes account uses a gmail account while I've had a mobile me account to use for everything else. The itunes account is also used for music and apps for the my kids and their ipod touches. They each have mobileme accounts as well.

Another thing…I've been able to borrow an ipad at work from time to time. It's setup with an account configured at work and the apps that were purchased through that account. I've been able to bring it home and then add apps purchased through my own itunes account to it. I have some concern that this might not be doable when using icloud.

While I use my .mac account for cal/mail, we have shared it for our iTunes accounts in our family. So now do my kids need to get their own iCloud .Mac accounts? i.e. they have their own .mac accounts under our family account, but haven't used them as they use mine for iTunes.

I'm concerned about this too. My wife and I each have our own iTunes accounts and have separately purchased media that we either both like or need (e.g. Disney/Pixar movies for the kids).

I like the concept of the matching service. It would be great if they could do this for other digital media (movies, books).

I would love to be able to get some trade-in credit for actual physical media (atoms). Not likely, I know, but a boy can dream…

While you can't merge your multiple Apple accounts, it seems that Apple may be able to. I've seen reports on Apple forums where people have had this very issue and it's required an inquiry to Apple support, but it could be done. I'd suggest (of course) making a good backup of all your stuff, asking very nicely and wishing and hoping it works! Here's one forum thread that addresses the issue, there are others: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1230757?start=0&tstart=0

Hi David, I've had a .mac account since Jan 2006 (and at the time I had a separate Apple ID account). Somewhere along the line after everything converted over to MobileMe I no longer used my Apple ID. For a long while after MobileMe was launched I still used my .mac email address, before converting to the .me suffix. I've never had any trouble with duplicate accounts and have always had a single iTunes account. Probably more luck than judgement on my behalf, but it may mean there is a solution to the predicament you and others find yourself in. Hope you all can sort it out!

I had this issue when I signed up for .mac all of my itunes/apps stuff is an old inactive and embarrassing yahoo address. I contacted apple several times and asked if they could move my purchases from my embarrassing@yahoo.com address to my fresh .mac and was told no. ever since I've been in the same boat. one address for itunes and .mac (.me) address for mail, calendar, etc. I was told they literally did not have the ability to merge accounts. I even asked if they could just credit me for my purchases and I'll buy the exact stuff again with the new .mac address and was told no.

Yes, you can change the e-mail address. I've done this in the past. But you cannot use de MobileMe address as the iTunes ID nickname. If you try this, you'll get and error alert informing that the email is already a Apple ID in use by MobileMe.

I don't think this will be a problem. When you convert your MobileMe account to iCloud you keep your MobileMe email address. So nothing will change inside of iTunes for you.

From the MobileMe notification emailed to me from Apple:

"When you sign up for iCloud, you'll be able to keep your MobileMe email address and move your mail, contacts, calendars, and bookmarks to the new service."

Three years ago I decided to change my iTunes password on a lark, and since i was fiddling, I had the bright idea to change my Apple ID too. Unbeknownst to me I had just created a NEW account, not a simple update to my existing account! It took a long time and a lot of aggravation before I realized the consequences of that fateful day. Two separate accounts full of apps and music with no elegant way to merge them! I felt that Apple might have offered a popup warning saying " you are creating a new account and previous purchases will not work in this NEW account without extreme hassle". I have to constantly reauthorize computers and reenter passwords. Yes, I too am very interested to see how iCloud handles all this.

It's almost a relief knowing that I'm not alone in this problem. While I knew I wouldn't be alone, it is still nice to see a discussion going on regarding this problem.

I'm in the exact same situation as you are and I really am worried about my purchases on my old "Gmail Apple ID" account. The cynical part of me believes Apple will force us to use .me email addresses with iCloud, either new or existing. The hopeful part of me believes that Apple is well aware of this problem and will allow us to merge Apple IDs, allow us to transfer purchases, and/or allow multiple Apple ID's on the same device. All of this sounds like one big headache but if anyone can find a clear solution, it's Apple. I just hope I'm not being blindly optimistic. My experience with Apple tells me that we'll all be fine somehow in the end.

To the commenters stating that users can just change their Apple ID emails to use their existing MobileMe emails, this has proven impossible for me. In fact, I spoke with an Apple representative through Express Lane yesterday and they told me creating a MobileMe account also automatically makes that account an Apple ID. I hope that makes sense. They essentially told me that there is nothing I can do at the moment and to wait until new information is available.

Ok, now you've got me worried. I think we'll have to use our iTunes account as our iCloud. I wonder what happens to me.com addresses after June 2012 (the date they've extended us to and the date mobile me comes to an end).

Great to know that I am also not alone in this problem. 🙂
I spent most of last night sleepless as I was trying to figure out what to do… :/ In the end I also sent an email to Apple support, so If they tell me anything useful, I'll write it here.
There is also an active thread On Macrumors, I7ll post this link there, so that we can all connect and share our thoughts and experiences. 🙂

I used my gmail w/iTunes until 2004 when I got .mac (and have had it ever since). iTunes appears to treat @mac.com and @me.com identically; you can log in with either address.

After getting iTunes 10.3 I downloaded some music purchased but didn't have in iTunes for some reason. I then logged in as my former gmail self and tried to do that same thing. I got really weird errors (most of those songs are FairPlay protected). After 10.3.1 came out, the error messages got more sane but I didn't like what it said. (paraphrasing) "You have more than one iTunes Store account authorized in iTunes, and you've already used iCloud to redownload music. You cannot redownload music from a different account for 90 days".

I'm sure they're protecting against people logging in at their friends' houses and redownloading music, but this one affects me. I'm missing entire albums from my old iTunes account!

…I hope you are right, David – and I hope that while they are at it, they finally allow people to move over their old licenses for software that is now available in the App store! Not all software I own is at the App store, but a lot of it is, and I would be even willing to pony up a small per-license fee (I'd say, $1 per license, even a bit more for "big" software) to be able to manage as much of it as possible in a centralized way through the App store…

I believe you can set up iTunes store and iCloud to use separate Apple IDs. Use your old Apple ID for Appstore, and Mobileme ID for iCloud stuff. This actually could be a preferred way especially if you are sharing your iTunes store purchases with your family or friend members since by using separate IDs, your personal stuff associated with iCloud ID won't be shared with them.

I have the same problem as well. I am also in the developer program and have identified the following:
    1. icloud can support multiple devices(5gb free)
    2. icloud has an option for upgrading storage(not active yet)
    3. icloud can be created with any email address
    4. icloud-photostream can be toggled between multiple accounts

In our house the mac has a single user account that we share and we customize our ios devices.

I have been playing with the options in the beta to figure out the optimal configuration for my needs and have deduce the following.

I can convert my itunes account that I share with my family to an icloud account to support 1 Mac, 2 iphones, and 3 ipads. In this scenario the 1 icloud account would support all purchases and backup.

What would be nice is if apple would allow users with multiple apple id's to combine them into one account. Based on the posts I have read there are many of us with multiple accounts .mac, .me., as well as other apple ids accumulated over the years. The only good thing is that the icloud has multiple device support which is unique for each devices data.
If I see any additional interesting data as the beta develops ill post it later.

Got the same (similar) issue. I had a .mac ID, was auto-converted to a .me ID in the Mobile Me changeover. Also have a couple of old Apple IDs used to make purchases in the part. Wife and I use my .mac ID as the shared Apple ID for itunes purchases, and our mac mini server at home is set up with this. We also use that ID for Home Sharing (2 laptops, mac mini, her iphone, my ipad, and an ATV). We have a mobile me family pack. Hers is the master account, with a primary email she uses for work and an alias she uses for personal email etc. That's set up to sync to her iphone and her laptop. I have my mobile me account as part of that family pack which syncs my laptop and my ipad. All functions well just now.

But here's the issue: the ID I use to sync my mobile me is THE SAME as the ID we use as our shared iTunes ID. Because Apple made it that way. As in, my firstname.secondname@mac.com ID is tied to my firstname.secondname@me.com ID.

So, if I upgrade that to iCloud, as I will have to when Mobile me is discontinued if I want to keep getting and syncing my email etc, then by default I've also upgraded the ID we share for iTunes purchases. But if my wife uses that icloud-upgraded ID on, say, her iphone then it's going to sync all MY email etc to her phone.

Apple is clearly migrating people to a 'single sign on' model where the single sign on is the iCloud ID. This is going to cause major issues for mobile me users who share IDs. My only hope is that we can get round it by using iTunes Match. We'll likely need to take out two subscriptions, each upgrade our mobile me accounts to iCloud accounts, each use Match to upload the same set of songs (from a copy of the shared library) and have Match make them available to each of us. Then, I guess we can take care of sharing any new purchases using Home Sharing, or something like that. But it all seems painful and extremely confusing.

it is not necessary to have the Apple id and mobile me account address same.

Thank you for contacting the iTunes Store. If you have any further inquiries, please do not hesitate to reply to this email. I will be happy to help in any way I can. Have a Great day.

So that solves the problem for me. 🙂

It's incredible all the amazing things apple has created for us in iOS 5 & Lion but they can't figure out a way to combine accounts? I'm sure they will figure something out.

    It states in the MobileMe merger section that;

    MobileMe Accounts
"You cannot merge two accounts into one. However, you will be able to move your MobileMe account (yourname@me.com) to iCloud and, if you choose, you can continue to use a different iTunes account for store purchases and iTunes in the Cloud."

I was also worried about the two account thing…hope this is what I hope it is 🙂

Hi all, just adding to this thread way after the fact.

My situation is complicated by the fact that I have a US account and a UK account. I move back and forth between the two countries (long unrelated story) and have tried at various times to just have one or the other but always end up getting gift cards from friends/family in both contexts, or finding that my US bank app is only available from the US store and my UK bank app from the UK (or the same with a film or a book or a song).

I have to say that the iCloud features are exciting but I am increasingly nervous about having spent money on both accounts and always running into increasingly sticky situations with syncs, backups, devices, sharing with my partner, etc. In fact, it makes me feel like I don't actually own legitimately own my own media that I paid for! I must say that this makes me wary about continuing to buy into apple's long term 'own the whole ecosystem' strategy.

BTW, never posted on here before but a long time mac user and big fan of the podcast and blog…
