I noticed today that LaunchBar has released a beta of their new version 5. I’ve tried LaunchBar a few times in the past but I always seem back with my beloved Quicksilver. Tonight I loaded LaunchBar yet again. I’ll be using it for the next month and reporting back. If you are a LaunchBar power user, sound off in the comments or send me a note. I’d love to hear your tips.

I love it, but Quicksilver has never been stable for me on Leopard. I’m secretly hoping LB5 will be enough to replace it.

Like a lot of people I was a diehard Quicksilver fan, but gave LaunchBar a try after getting fed up with Quicksilver crashing so much for me.
At first I was like “It doesn’t do this like Quicksilver. It doesn’t do that like Quicksilver”, but after a while I was hooked. Some things I still prefer in Quicksilver, but there are lots of things that I like/prefer about LaunchBar as well.
It’s rock solid & doesn’t crash for me. Instant send is good & you can open a file using with a different app to the default in less steps than Quicksilver.
I think to truly get the most out of LaunchBar you have to spend an hour or 2 reading through the manual (& in some cases re-reading through it again), & getting used to all the different little features (same as with Quicksilver I guess). If you read through the manual & spend a month with it I’m sure you’ll come to love it. Whether or not it would replace Quicksilver for you I don’t know?

It’s just hard in the beginning, if you are really used to Quicksilver.

I too am finding LaunchBar 5 to be a worthy successor to Quicksilver. The program’s stability is key and, now I’m used to it, I hardly notice the differences any more. I’ll also be registering when it’s out of beta.

I did a brief install when the LaunchBar beta came out. Seemed nice, but I didn’t want to go through the process of figuring out if it cuold do all the things I do with Quicksilver.
I’ve not had the issues others have had with Qs I guess…it probably crashes onces every week or two, but more than makes up for that time when I’m using it.

I almost feel a twinge of infidelity…but I really like LB 5 “better” then Quicksilver. I didn’t at first, but it doesn’t take long to become accustomed to it NOT crashing under Leopard and also I think it’s just faster. I am nearly ready to drag QS into the trash.
