My receptionist got married yesterday and somehow I got recruited to do the slideshow. FotoMagico makes it so easy. You literally drop the pictures in and the “Ken Burns” effect is done for you. This used to take me a lot of time in iMovie. I don’t really care much for the way it incorporates music. It should automatically adjust the slide length to match the song length but for assembling the pictures it makes it too east.
I had the slideshow done when I showed up for the wedding but I did drop in one picture of them at the alter at the end and that one got a lot of response from the guests. The funniest part was the “official” photographer (who also drives a Mac) practically assaulted me and wanted to know the name of “that program.”
I know folks who have this software rave about it. I just do not see what it provides that iMovie does not. I can drag and drop as many photos as I want onto an iMovie project, set it ahead for automatic transitions and to automagically apply Ken Burns effect.
I can drop the audio file onto iMovie, trim it, move it, fade it, etc… I wish the audio in iMovie were more versatile, but I understand Fotomagico is not great for audio either. (If it had an audio timeline — well that would be a reason to buy it!)
Can Fotomagico post to a dot.mac gallery with one click? Can you send to your iPhone with one click?
I was considering buying this software (or Photo to Movie) before iMovie 08. But iMovie 08 fixed much of the jaggie-ness one would see when watching the Ken Burns effect in a DVD created with iMovie HD.
Why would I spend money on software that seems to have iMovie’s functionality (maybe with less features)?
I am a fan of iMovie (especially if used in conjuntion with Garageband for more extensive audio editing). I believe you could have thrown together a slideshow with music for your receptionist in the same amount of time using iMovie.
How’s this for “sparking” up a debate on your blog, David?!
p.s. A photographer did a review for Tim V. on Macreviewcast recently about this software. Again, nice review, but I did not hear one reason to use this software instead of iMovie.

You should download the demo and compare. The last time I did the Ken Burns effect in iMovie it was A LOT of work. Maybe it has gotten better and I wasted $50. I’m curious to hear your impressions.

I am making a slideshow for a 50th birthday party of a close friend. If I have the time, maybe I will try to make a version in Fotomagico.
The folks at Boinx would be well served to add audio funtionality to their program. That would distinguish it from iMovie!

Looks like Fotomagico added the “one click” publishing feature that was missing:
