My MacBook Pro is at the Apple Store getting its third logic board and, strangely, I’m okay with that. I first noticed a problem with the right USB port dropping off when accessing a USB Drive or recording. After some diagnosis at the Apple Store, they figured the logic board needed to be replaced. So I turned it in and a few days later got the cal to pick it up.
When I showed up, a very nice Apple Genius explained the new board had a small defect for the onboard battery (the one that keeps time when you shut it down). They had already ordered a replacement but told me to take the Mac home until the new one showed up. Sure enough, they now have the replacement board and are setting things right. This was a great consumer experience. Not because the board was wrong but because they cared enough to figure that out and get the situation resolved even before I knew about it.
As an aside, if you ever get a new logic board, make sure to de-authorize your iTunes account before the replacement. The logic board has the serial number on it so to the rest of the world it is like you got a new computer. It looks like I’m also going to need to restart the Time Machine.
Looks like there might be some issues with logic boards on some recent builds – my MacBook Air is in the shop for the same reason (I ordered it the day after the keynote so it is is in the first builds). I had not used the Air for a couple of days and when I booted it up a couple of days, nothing came on. Did not have a change to de-register so hopefully will not have a problem with authorizing iTunes.

This wasn’t on the MacBook Air but my older MacBook Pro. The problem was the right USB port which on this moel is attached to the logic board. Had it been the USB ports on the left side, it apparently would not have needed a logic board but something else.

i’m in the process of getting my 2nd logic board replaced. unfortunately because i’m abroad, it’s taking longer than a few days, and the repair man didn’t give me any explanation (language barrier). the first time i had problems, the display wasn’t working and i also had to get a new screen. this time the display is also not working, but the whole thing won’t boot up either.

I am having my Logic Board replaced today, on warrenty for my mac pro. The problem manifested itself as no audio signal from lineout/speaker socket at rear of case

ohhhh boy, what an ordeal…first of all the only , ONLY reason i have a mac is because it was a gift. so i get this cool gift to basically use as a play thing and decide..hey i kinda like this computer, so i make the horrible decision to start using it for work emails then everything goes to h*LL…quickly…iChat stops, the computer exterior is so hot, one by one, programs freeze and then i spend 6 hours over 3 days on the phone with apple support. Finally they offer to pick it up and repair it. they say i’ll have it back in 3-4 days. well here i am 12 days later and they say the main logic board needs to be replaced. it took them 7 days to locate the part. it only took 3 days to get a new one shipped from China…what gives here? perhaps apple is used to dealing with the artsy crowd that never needs anything…yesterday. i don’t know, thanks for letting me vent!

I wrote in August about getting my 2nd logic board. Well the day i got it back, it started getting really hot, the fan starting creaking, and than the whole thing shut off. after rebooting, it happened again several other times. brought it back to the shop and they said there was nothing wrong with it. Now that i’m back in the states, i brought it to a repair shop and they are now ordering my 3rd logic board. In addition, now the latch on the cover gets stuck. Yeah, i paid over 3,000$ for this one.

After a month of sending my early 2008 Pro back and forth to Texas, they finally sent a new later version 2008. I’ve had it about 2 months now and other than my office programs crashing repeatedly, everything seems AOK. Signed up for mobile me and have also purchased an exterior hard drive to back up everything every day. I must say I was very impressed at the level of customer service I received once I was handed off to a high level customer service rep. She even sent me an email last week to make certain I was happy. Be persistent and insist they replace your unit if it is still under warranty.
